What Is a Browser-Free Smartphone? A Plain-English Guide
Share
A browser-free smartphone is a real smartphone with the web browser and the open app store taken out. You keep the apps you actually need — calling, texting, maps, email, banking, school and work apps — and leave out unrestricted web browsing and social media.
How it differs from other options
- Versus a regular smartphone: a regular phone is open by default. A browser-free phone is closed by default, so there's nothing to resist.
- Versus a parental control app: a control app sits on top of an open phone and has to keep working to keep it closed. A browser-free phone never had the browser to begin with. See our full comparison.
- Versus a flip phone: a flip phone removes almost every app. A browser-free smartphone keeps the ones you choose. See Grow Phone vs. a basic flip phone.
How apps get on the phone
On a Grow Phone, you request apps through the Grow Control app. Our team reviews each request. Once approved, the app is sent securely to the phone and you tap Install. On a child's phone, the request goes to the parent for approval first.

Who it's for
Parents choosing a first phone for a child or teen, and adults who want fewer distractions without giving up the apps they rely on. See the options for adults and for kids and teens, or shop the Grow Phone lineup.
